Since start of the Covid-19 pandemic it has become a challenge for the regular bi-annual Chess Olympiad to take place whereby the International Chess Federation FIDE set out on organizing an online format to somewhat compensate and keep chess players worldwide engaged in their beloved sport. Curacao participates in the FIDE Online Olympiad 2021, which is the 2nd edition of this new online format and we invite you to check out the various links below for info and follow our national team. Based on the current world ranking of Team Curaçao, Team Curaçao was placed in the 4th division in pool E with countries such as Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago and Bahamas, among others.
FIDE (International Chess Federation) proves that the pandemic also offers opportunities by organizing this large-scale chess event with the participation of more than 155 chess countries. Every country had to put together a mixed team every match consisting of 2 men, 2 women and two U20 youth players. Team Curaçao is represented in this tournament by the Fide Meesters Fabio Mensing, Rurik Capella and Wim Blijstra. This trio was reinforced with the youthful talents Rishab Anand Bahadoer and Kennard Martinez-Gallardo. Both youth players can look back with pride on their participation and have gained the necessary experience. Gregory Capella made his debut at this Chess Olympiad with a creditable 50% score (2 out of 4). The participating ladies in Team Curaçao were led by Woman Candidate Master, Ailen Mena and Taqesyah Marcos with excellent scores of 8 out of 11 and 5 out of 5 respectively. Aarona Koenraad (4 wins) and the experienced Seydi Salem–Moussa (2 wins and a draw ) have made an important contribution to the good performance of Team Curaçao. After competing for 3rd place in the final rounds, Team Curaçao eventually finished 4th just behind Teams of Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago and Haiti.
